Initial contracts are for
two-years. Teachers are expected to work
for entire school years. If teachers
wish to leave, adequate notice must be given.
Generally this notice is expected before the beginning of the Winter
Break.
Salary and Tuition Assistance
The starting base salary
for new teachers varies depending on professional experience and academic
credentials and is highly competitive among international schools. The maximum experience credit is 8 years and
we have 20 steps total on the Teacher Pay Scale. In addition, overseas allowances are paid on a one-per-family basis. There is a 50% overseas
bonus paid to each single teacher or the highest-paid member of a teaching
couple. A relocation allowance is paid
to foreign-hire teachers upon arrival on a one-per-family basis. All
compensation is paid in local currency, but any amount can be converted into
other currencies without difficulty. Children of faculty members are eligible
for enrollment tuition-free in KAUST schools from age 3 through grade 12.
Transportation and Baggage
Initial travel for a foreign-hire teacher and family between their home-of-record and KAUST is provided. Beginning the second year, for each year of employment a travel allowance between KAUST and the home-of record is provided to foreign-hire teachers and any dependents who are residing in Saudi Arabia.
Shipment
of household goods is provided for
foreign-hire teachers at the beginning of employment in the amount of 1 e-box per family member who will reside
with the teacher in Saudi. Upon termination of employment these weights
may be increased based upon the number of years of service. Packing and
unpacking service costs are also borne by KAUST.
Medical Benefits
Full local medical
insurance is provided from the beginning of the employment contract for the
employee and family members.
International coverage is available at extra cost to the employee
Leave and Retirement
Sick
leave is provided and may be
accumulated. Home leave, personal leave, and
bereavement leave are also offered.
The school
provides a retirement plan. For details on this plan, please contact Human Resources or see the KAUST main website.
Housing
KAUST provides housing
facilities depending on position and family size. Employees hired after July 1, 2009 will be
charged a subsidized rent and nominal amount for utilities, depending on
the size of the quarters.
Passport, Visas and Taxes
Teachers and accompanying dependents must have passports which are valid for at least a year from the date of arrival
from their native country. A Saudi visa will be required, but
obtaining one, with KAUST’s assistance, is expedited
Teachers are liable for taxes as dictated by their home country. In general, a teacher working in Saudi pays a lower percentage of his income in tax than he would if working in the US for comparable pay. Current US
tax law effectively excludes $85,700 of the KAUST salary from US taxes. US tax return assistance is readily available.
